Despite Lebanon being one of the most liberal countries in the Middle East, craft brewing hasn't really taken off yet. Located on the shores of the Mediterranean between Beirut and Tripoli, this is Lebanon's only real craft beer experience. Even if you don't like the beer, drop by for a bite at the brewery in Batroun, which features a huge outdoor seating area and funky dog-friendly beach bar.
Lab 16 is an experimental brewing series from the Polish Pracownia Piwa brewery. It came recommended by a bartender at Pulapka Bar in Gdansk, and we joined the crowd in lounge chairs in the middle of the street on a warm summer day. Baltic porters are popular in those parts, and this one didn't disappoint.
Located on the lovely German island of Rugen, Insel-Brauerei manages to accomplish what most northern German brewers can't: make great beer. They only produce bottles and serve a fantastic variety of styles at their brewery on the way to the popular Jasmund National Park. It's not open late, but don't miss this place if you're anywhere near Rugen. One of the best small breweries I've ever been to.
